Stephen Fry portrait which I named ‘Cool to be Square’. I have recently painted two portraits of Stephen Fry. One was an attempt at a more realistic look and this looser style version. I found that the looser style above had more of a likeness and also that I perhaps need to practice painting the mouth more. Having had no portraiture education I rely on watching YouTube videos and practising as much as possible. This painting started off A3 size with a head and shoulders composition but the face cropped closely made a better statement for the narrative that this guy is pretty darn cool. Cropping it into a square adds to that narrative. Years ago it was often a name calling that intelligent people faced was being called ‘square’. Painted in watercolours around 7″ x 7″ 28.1.19 by Sophie Huddlestone.
